212 girls awarded with Fair & Lovely Foundation Scholarships 2010 to pursue their dreams, Saluting the spirit of women empowerment
Mumbai, 17th December, 2010: It was an afternoon that brought smiles and tears of joy, all at the same time, to the faces of several girls, their families and the audience. In a packed ceremony at the Y B Chavan auditorium, 212 girls, from underprivileged backgrounds but with a burning drive to strike big in life, were awarded scholarships by the Fair and Lovely Foundation. If some wanted to overcome societal prejudices against educating girls, others strove to give their ailing parents a better lifestyle and a few were delighted be the first graduates in their families thanks to this scholarship. “Higher quality education is necessary to empower the Indian woman in her every day struggle in dealing with multiple deprivations on the basis of class, caste and gender,” said chief guest Narendra Jadhav, an eminent economist, educationist and member of the Planning Commission.
The Fair & Lovely Foundation Scholarship helps academically brilliant girls from the lowest economic strata of the society fulfill their dreams of higher education. These students are supported with course fees, accommodation, local travel, books and stationery costs, depending upon the need.
In its eighth year of awarding scholarships to girls, the Fair and Lovely Foundation has helped more than thousand young girls realize their dreams of a brighter future. Mr. Govind Rajan, Category Head, Skincare, Hindustan Unilever Limited said, “Women’s empowerment is linked to the India’s growth story. Look at the National Literary Mission. It was renamed to make 70 million people — 60 million of them women — functionally literate by 2012. We, at HUL, also believe that education is the key to upliftment of the girl child and women in the country. The Fair & Lovely Foundation Scholarship is a humble but vital step in support of this belief.”
With its mission of empowering women, the Fair & Lovely Foundation also felicitated women achievers from different fields. Deepika Kumari from Ranchi was honoured for winning a gold in the women's archery (individual recurve) at the Commonwealth Games; Shriya Dinakar from Ranchi for being the youngest pilot and youngest trainee astronaut while Mary Kom from Imphal was applauded for being first Indian women boxer to have won Five World Titles consecutively. Dorje, from Mumbai, who single handedly managed to change the mindset and attitude of people in the Naxal controlled region of Gadchiroli towards the Government and the Police. These women achievers not only set an example for the scholarship awardees but also serve as role models to pursue their life goals.
Says, Jyoti Sultane from Aurangabad, who is studying to be a computer science graduate: “It is only because of this scholarship that I can dream of becoming a graduate, with my father suffering from paralysis and blood pressure disorders my mother is trying to make ends meet working at a local AIDS awareness organization this scholarship will help me to complete my further studies and assist my mother.” The Fair & Lovely Foundation hopes to bring a ray of hope into lives of many more girls like Jyoti.

Little hearts suffering from complex cardiac conditions
Little hearts suffering from complex cardiac conditions
now ready to lead a healthy life”
~ children from interiors of Madhya Pradesh
have undergone heart surgery at Fortis Hospitals~
Bhopal, 25 Nov 2010: It is happy days again for these bright little kids who are now all set to go back home and start a healthy life. These 13 little hearts from interiors of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan were suffering from complex heart conditions and have now undergone successful surgery at Fortis Hospitals.
“I was not sure why I couldn’t play with my fellow kids from our neighbourhood and why I had to gasp for breath every time I ran. All I want is to be like my friends who keeps running all day long and yet they don’t get tired” that is all that this little child Master Rishav Chourasia knows about his health. At 8, he wonders why he is not like his friends. He was suffering from a complex disease of the heart called as Tetralogy of fallout (TOF). It is the most common heart defect in children. The condition is characterised by a combination of four heart defects i.e. pulmonary stenosis, ventricular hypertrophy, ventricular septal defect, and an aorta, and results in a situation wherein deoxygenated (blue) blood flows out to the body, thus making the children appear bluish. Rishav’s condition was unique as the critical blood vessels of the heart muscle were crossing the path which had to be cut to solve the problem of pulmonary stenosis. The doctors had to do the procedure making sure that the surgery did not affect the blood vessels of this young boys’ heart.
Like Rishav there were 12 more children who walked smilingly into to the hospital, little did they knew that they had heart defects at birth and were undergoing complex surgeries at such a young age to correct their problem? “Congenital Heart Disease is a serious problem plaguing the country. An early detection of the heart defects at birth could help in complete cure. It is very important that awareness about heart disease at birth is properly spread among the masses so that it is detected at the right time. Once the deformity is detected at the appropriate time, treatment is definitely possible and once treated these kids live a normal and healthy life” said Dr. Joseph Xavier, Consultant Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon Fortis Hospitals.
While explaining to the media about congenital heart disease Dr. Joseph Xavier touched upon some of the very complex cases which he operated, “Ram a 3 year old child from Madhya Pradesh son of a temple priest, was suffering from a rare condition of the heart called as total anomalous systemic venous correction where the entire impure blood was returning to the wrong chamber and was getting mixed with pure blood which posed a life threatening situation for Ram. The surgery that we performed involved rerouting of his right artery correcting his deformity. The procedure was successfully done. Ram today is healthy and free from all complications and ready to go back home.”
“We had yet another challenging child Baby Sara who is just 7months old. She had multiple ventricular septal defect (VSD) which is commonly known as hole in heart. The challenge in doing the surgery on Baby Sara was her weight which was just 5 kg and also her age. However now Sara’s hole in the heart has been corrected after the surgery” added Dr. Joseph Xavier.
“There are many children in our country who are suffering from congenital heart disease or heart defects and there is a huge space for creating more awareness around these disease and how early detection and can help save these little hearts. We at Fortis Hospitals are making an attempt to extend our support to save these young hearts. We have been receiving such kids from various parts of India through our association with ENR and Father Chinnappan who is spearheading this initiative in our country” said P Davison, Head of operations Fortis Hospitals Bannerghatta.
Father Chinappan, a priest from Bhopal, has been working towards the cause of helping children suffering from congenital heart defects get their treatment. Father is associated with a German Foundation called ENR who helps raise funds for the surgeries. Fortis and Dr. Joseph Xavier has been actively supporting Father Chinappan’s cause by conducting congenital heart defect surgeries for the children, where the cost of the surgery at a subsidized rate.
Congenital Heart Disease refers to heart disease which is present at birth. These are primarily seen in neonates, infants and children; although in our country it is not uncommon to see adults with uncorrected heart defects. The percentage of children suffering from congenital heart disease in our country is likely to be humongous considering the high birth rate. This shows clearly that the emphasis on this kind of heart disease should be enormous. Though there have been rapid advances in the diagnosis and treatment of CHD over the last few decades, the mortality rate is still very high in our country due to lack of inadequate awareness, screening programs etc in the grass root level to detect the disease at the right time.
Managing CHD in India is indeed an important issue and is often overlooked. The total number of dedicated pediatric cardiologist and surgeons in our country are also very less and there are few centres which are equipped to perform such surgeries. Hence there is a need to spread more awareness around CHD and the fact that if diagnosed early this can be treated. Another essential element that needs to be highlighted is on Foetal Echocardiography. This is used to diagnose heart defects before a child is born. The diagnosis done through foetal echocardiography helps in treating the heart defect in the child at an early stage especially when many times some interventions need to be done immediately after the birth. If abnormalities of the foetal heart are discovered by a prenatal screening procedure, this special examination of the heart of can be performed with a referral from a physician which will help identifying the defect at the right stage, perform corrective procedures and reduce the mortality and morbidity rate.
“I was touched by the innocent smile of child when I saw him in one of the hospitals in Bhopal and came to know that he has a heart defect and his parents cannot afford his surgery. Since then my drive for spreading awareness about heart diseases in children started. My priest friend from Germany who came to know about this drive put me on to ENR and since then there has been no looking back. We are getting such kids to Fortis every year for treatment. It wouldn’t have been possible for me to complete my quest for helping these children without the support from Fortis, Dr. Joseph Xavier and ENR. I would like to urge my fellow brothers to wake up to this problem where many kids of our country are dying due to lack of treatment. A little help could save millions of lives” expressed Father Chinnappan.

One of the leading groups in the small scale sector, Pragya Equipments Pvt Ltd, had filed a suit against the Man Industries of Pit

Decision Awarded against Man Industries (I) Ltd. under the MSMED Act 2006
21th August 2010. One of the leading groups in the small scale sector, Pragya Equipments Pvt Ltd, had filed a suit against the Man Industries of Pithampur under the MSMED Act 2006 in the MSME Facilitation Council. The suit filed against had specified the Man Industries to pay the company with the outstanding amount of Rs. 57.50 lacs along with the interest thereon Rs. 88.30 lacs (Till 29.05.2010) but despite the order from the council, the company has not paid-off the outstanding amount of Rs. 1 crore 46 lacs.
It is worth noting that the Pragya Equipments Pvt Ltd, in 2004-05 had supplied Man Industries with machinery worth Rs. 1.25 crores for its pipe plant, of which Rs. 57.5 lacs still stands unpaid by the Man Industries (I) Ltd. Even after repeated reminders by the Pragya Equipments, the company has not taken any positive action on the matter.
In 2007, Pragya Equipments filed their papers for issue of notification against Man Industries to the MSME Facilitation Council on the issue. MSME Facilitation Council setup by the small-scale industrial Ministry of the Central Government to safeguard the rights of the small industries, declared their decision in favor of the Pragya Equipments, on 2nd July 2010, after careful and comprehensive scrutiny into the matter and completing the legal formalities. Owing to the decision, the Council has ordered to Man Industries to pay Pragya Equipments within 30 days, an amount of Rs. 1,45,79,157 that includes the outstanding principle amount along with the interest on outstanding amount to the date. But overlooking the order, Man Industries has still not made with the payment. The amount stands at Rs. 1.52 crores to the day including further interest from 29.05.2010 to till date.
Mr. Lakhmi Chand Tolani, CMD, Pragya Equipments Pvt Ltd said, “Even after the decision of paying us with the outstanding amount along with the interest, the company has not paid it to us, and we have once again approached the Council requesting for taking further action. Man Industries, like the other small-scale industries had proposed us to settle the account with half the amount. Many small industries of the state have to struggle for settling their accounts with various corporations, companies and societies. We with the help of this press conference would like to tell our comrades of small industries that the Indian Government has setup this MSME Facilitation Council that safeguards our interests and that its operations in the state are being carried out pervasively and actively. There is no time constraint to file in our complaints and that outstanding amounts of howsoever old cases of any duration or time frame can be filed”.
ZEE TV Bhaiyyas and Didis celebrates “Rakshabandhan” with Love …!
ZEE TV Bhaiyyas and Didis celebrates “Rakshabandhan” with Love …!
Rakshabandhan is a day that one wants to leave everything aside and rush home to your brother or sister, just to show them you care! Here’s a look at what some of your favorite Zee TV celebrities are up to this Raksha Bandhan …
Sushant Rajput (Manav of Pavitra Rishta) – I have 4 elder sisters, so you can well imagine how much mithaai I get force-fed on Raakhi day. I always thought I’d turn diabetic with the amount of laddoos and kaju katris and halwa that was thrust down my throat! This year will probably be the first year I’ll not be at home for Rakhi, so I’m going to feel rather nostalgic. As a kid, I was rather scared of the day. After all it’s any boy’s nightmare to have pretty girls come up and tie you a rakhi! (smiles)
Iqbal Khan (Rudra of Sanjog se Bani Sangini) – Well, we don’t traditionally celebrate rakshabandhan at home but I have not one, but two Raakhi sisters. Producer Ratna Sinha has tied me a rakhi for the last 2 years. We share a really warm rapport! Another extremely close friend who I’ve always looked upon as a sister is Kismet Ahluwalia, she’s a journalist with NDTV Profit, based out of New York. Not a single year has gone by that she hasn’t sent me a Raakhi! When I was much younger in school, I had a lot of girls tying me rakhis … as we grew up, we grew out of that habit too somehow! (chuckles and winks)
Kratika Sengar (Jhansi Ki Rani)– My brother’s a complete cutie … He’s 6 yrs younger! I have always bullied him and I’m sure I’ll continue to do that until we’re both really old! There was this one time when we were both very young and I was standing on the edge of a cliff. It was not a great height thankfully, just about 12 feet or so … my brother playfully kicked me off the cliff and I ended up hurting myself pretty nasty! He kept crying until I got better because he felt really guilty. Strangely, we bonded over this incident a lot and grew closer. In all my tiffs with parents, he always stands by me. He stays in Delhi at the moment but since I’ll have no break from the shoot schedule, he’ll come & join me in Mumbai!
Ratan Rajput (Lali of Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo) – After giving birth to 5 daughters of which I was the fifth, my mother gave birth to a son … my darling brother! So we all love him a lot … he’s the apple of our eyes! You would typically imagine that the brother is the focus of attention on Raksha Bandhan at every home, but being the youngest sister in the family, I always hogged the limelight and was pampered with gifts! Apart from my own brother, I have been tying a rakhi to Jay Soni (actor) for the last 2 years. He’s family to me!
Abhishek Rawat (Shekhar of Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo) - As kids, Raksha Bandhan to me was all about mum waking us up early, packing us off to the bathroom for a shower at an ungodly hour … My sister being younger to me, mum used to make her touch my feet. So it made me feel all grown up and responsible! Today, my sister stays in Lucknow. Given the crazy schedule one keeps, there’s no way I ever manage to make it to her place on the day of Raksha Bandhan. So we helpless souls make the day special for each other by sending across a Rakhi & a gift through the post. We round it off with a longish chat on telephone!
Yashpal Sharma (The evil Kuwar of Mera Naam karegi Roshan) – Both my sisters stay in Punjab. In the days that I studied in Delhi, there was an All-India bandh and I was extremely keen to get home for Raksha Bandhan. It usually took me just 4 hours to reach Hisar (Haryana) but with practically no modes of transport plying, it took me a good 12 hours to get home. I traveled in trucks, bullock-carts and tempos to get home but it was every bit worth the effort when my sisters treated me to all the delicacies they’d cooked for me!
Neil Bhatt (Abhi of 12/24 Karol Bagh)- Shikha my sister is a complete darling. My sweetest memories of our time together include the nights before our most crucial exams. We’d both make it a point to literally be there for each other, make chai or maggi for each other, ensure that we don’t fall asleep and keep studying through the night. These are small things but warm your heart when you think back about them years later. This Rakshabandhan, I’ll make it a point to spend some quality time with her!
